Check this one out. It's a Madagascar Orange 1968 Mustang hardtop Rainbow of Colors. It was sent in by Bryant Hatfield from Palmer, Texas. Bryant tells us, "It was owned by my friends father. It was buried in a garage for years. His father had passed away so I have no
story on the car. Kinda upsetting, but I had noticed the car had no
paint code and I started researching and found your site and one other
that showed 1187 as my DSO code which states it was a special order
orange." The car came with a 289 V8. It now has a 351w V8 engine.

We know of two other Madagascar Orange 1968 Rainbow of Colors Mustangs ordered under the 71-1187 order district/DSO. This one appears to have had a vinyl top.

Looks to be little rust. Or the fenders have been replaced.

Here is Mike's 1968 Rainbow of Colors promotional Mustang in its original special order blue paint and a bit of primer. The door data tag reads: Body

2 2.79 conventional rear axle, and Trans

Here is one of them.

Oh my, check out this 1968 Salt Lake City
Rainbow of Colors Mustang hardtop in special order purple! The photo looks like a painting. Jayme owns this car and is getting ready for restoration. It has the optional J-code, 230hp, 302ci 4V V8 under the hood, GT side stripe, full wheel covers, parchment interior trim, C4 automatic transmission, and of course special purple paint. We have been looking for the purple paint that has been listed in ads for the Rainbow of Colors promotion, and this one shows it off. We think it is Ford special paint code WT9083 (see the door data tag photo for a non-faded view of this paint). This amazing car and great photo is our Attitude of the Week starting July 9th, 2022.

Door data tag and non-faded original purple special order paint is captured in this photo. The VIN number indicates the J-code 302ci V8. 65A for 2 door hardtop body style, blank paint code indicating a special order paint, 2U interior trim of parchment standard bucket seats, 21C scheduled build date of March 21, 1968, 73 district code (DSO) of Salt Lake City with a special order code of 3060, 5 3.00:1 standard differential, and W C4 automatic transmission. See our purple mustang page for all the special order purple paint shades available at the time. We think this is Ford special code WT9083.

Josh sends us this photo of a car he just found, a 1968 Rainbow of Colors promotional Mustang hardtop in special order Madagascar Orange. It has the louvered hood option, side stripe, possibility a vinyl roof, and special order paint. The
Rainbow of Colors promotion offered special paint on baseline and heavily optioned Mustangs in the California and Utah areas.
(from page 56 of the 1968 Collection)
Here is the door data tag for Josh's 1968 Rainbow of Colors promotional Mustang. It reads, 65A hardtop body style, blank color for special order, 2A black standard bucket seat, 16B build complete scheduled for February 16 1968, 721187 ordered in the San Jose area with special order 1187, 2 2.79:1 standard differential axle, and 5 4-speed manual transmission.

This is an authentic 1968 Limited Edition 'Gold Nugget Special'
promotional car for the Pacific Northwest dealerships. One of only 481
actually produced of the scheduled 525 to be offered through the
promotion. The Golden Nugget Mustang has a DSO# 741111 on the door
data plate, with the 1111 indicating the Special Order Unit as such.
It was a promotion that was offered at no additional charge, however
it could not be ordered. According to the promotion details and first
hand information from an original owner, each Ford Dealership in the
Pacific Northwest was to receive one Gold Nugget Special and the first
person who came in wanting to by it was the lucky person. It was sold
with a custom commemorative dash plaque with the original purchaser's
name and a simulated gold nugget affixed. All of the Gold Nugget
Mustangs were only available in the Coupe model, with Sunlit Gold
exterior paint, hood blackout stripes, and a black vinyl top with
either black or nugget gold interior. They were produced with varying
combinations of engines, transmissions and other available options.
This particular Gold Nugget Mustang has the original 200ci inline 6cyl
engine and 3spd manual transmission. It runs and drives excellent and
was driven on a 1200 mile road trip earlier this year with no issues.
It is currently driven several times a month and never has any issues
starting right up. It is virtually a rust free car and besides needing
paint it needs little else to be a great driver/show car. The interior
is in nearly perfect condition. Here is your chance to get a truely
limited production Mustang. There is a Gold Nugget Registry that has
been formed and to date less than two dozen have been confirmed to
still be in existence with less than a dozen actually registered. The
well known California Special had a production run of more than 4100
being built. The Gold Nugget Special was equal to approximately 10% of
that total making it a more unique and rare Mustang than the
California Special. I am asking 6250.00 and I may consider partial
trades. If you're looking for something different and special, this is
the Mustang for you. Feel free to email or call any time. Thanks, Jeff

Here is the door data tag which confirms this car is a Golden Nugget Special. The special order number 1111 after the order district code of 74 for Seattle was reserved for this special promotion. The promotion featured the 289 cubic inch 2V V8 engine, C4 automatic transmission, louvered hood, black stripes, black vinyl top, black interior, and featured unique golden plaques on the dashboard with the original owner's name engraved. 525 Golden Nugget Limited Edition Mustangs were offered.

This car needs restoration but its a special order car. It has special order Eastertime Coral exterior paint as part of the April 1968 Color of the Month promotion. Other upgrades includes a 289ci V8 engine (removed, not on this car anymore), automatic transmission, power steering, AM radio, tinted glass, wheel covers; most of which is missing. This car was ordered with
Orville and Ann's Mustang, since it has the same DSO and special order number. The door tag to this car reads 65A
blank 2A 15D 513000 2 W; where the paint code is blank.

Jorge Espino owns this Viper Red 1969 Shelby (probably a clone) hardtop project car. It does not have a transmission or engine. The decals inside say 428. 428ci engines were put into Shelby GT-500s. Jorge says that it would make a nice GT-500 or GT-350.
