(6 photos of a 1968 Sunlit Gold Mustang T-5 Convertible) This amazing 1968 Sunlit Gold T-5 Mustang comes to us from Mario Sikorski of Ingolstadt, Germany, and was our featured Attitude Of The Week for December 7th, 2008. Mario tells us that his T-5 has been restored, has all its matching factory numbers, and according to the Marti report this is a one of a kind. When these cars were exported to Germany, Ford could not register the "Mustang" name for sale. Ford replaced the "Mustang" emblems with "T-5" emblems. T-5 Mustangs exist from 1964 through 1979.
(2 photos of a 1968 Sunlit Gold Mustang Golden Nugget Special Hardtop) Scott Rear of Pitt Meadows, BC, Canada sent us this photo of his Sunlit Gold 1968 Golden Nugget Special Mustang hardtop with its original 289ci 2V V8 engine. This original Golden Nugget Special was purchased from Perry Morrell Motors which used to be in Silverton Oregon. Scott says, In the process of restoring her now. I am looking for images of the
dash plaque that came with the car so I can reproduce one. The vinyl roof
has been removed in the pictures. 525 of these cars were built and sold in the Seattle area and came with 289 cubic inch 2V V8 engine, C4 automatic transmission, louvered hood, black stripes, black vinyl top, black interior, and featured unique golden plaques on the dashboard with the original owner's name engraved. Check out the ad I found in the January 26th, 1968, edition of the Seattle Times.

(3 photos of a 1968 Sunlit Gold Mustang Shelby GT-350 Hertz Convertible) This is the first Shelby GT-350 built in 1968. It's also a Sunlit Gold Hertz car. The owner is Randy Cantrell from North Carolina. Randy tells us more,
"This car has been in my family since 1970. It was my brother's car. He was killed in 1972. His wife had a hard time driving a straight drive. I had just turned 16 and gotten my 1st car - a 1965 2+2 fastback 289 auto. My brother's wife asked me if I would trade my car for the Shelby. I didn't hesitate and I've had it ever since. I had no ideal it was the 1st 68 GT-350 convertible made until Peter Disher from www.thecoralsnake.com did the an article on the car. Needless to say it's a special car to me." Peter Disher discovered that Shelby's first four conversions on 1968 Mustangs where Hertz show cars - a GT350 convertible, GT350 fastback, GT500 convertible, and a GT500 fastback. Each was painted Sunlit Gold. And THIS is the GT350 Hertz convertible.
(1 photo of a 1968 Sunlit Gold Mustang Golden Nugget Special Hardtop) Sunlit Gold 1968 Gold Nugget Special Mustang hardtop which was only sold in the Seattle/Oregon area. We are still working to determine if a special darker version of Sunlit Gold called Anniversary Gold was used, but the
ad from 1968 says Sunlit Gold. Other standard options in the Gold Nugget special package was a 4 speed manual transmission, power steering, AM radio, center console, deluxe seat belts, black vinyl roof, performance tires, wheel covers, louvered hood, and front fascia integrated turn signals.

(2 photos of a 1968 Sunlit Gold Mustang Golden Nugget Special Hardtop) This is a special edition Sunlit Gold 1968 Mustang Golden Nugget Special hardtop. It has the original 302ci V8 and an automatic transmission. The owner tells us,
"The 1968 Golden Nugget Special or Golden Nugget Limited Edition Mustang was an Oregon/Seattle promotion which took a 1968 hardtop and offered it in Sunlit Gold (color code Y, usually followed with a '5' to indicate the black hood, and special order number 1111 after the 74 DSO found on the door data tag) although any of the standard or special Mustang
colors could be ordered. Also with this package came the louvered hood with black painted inserts, black vinyl top, a black interior, and featured unique golden plaques on the dashboard with the original owner's name engraved. 481 Golden Nugget Limited Edition Mustangs were actually produced of the 525 scheduled to be offered through the promotion. More pictures are available to the potential buyer."

Attitude Of The Week for the week starting September 8, 2013. It has it's original 289ci V8 and an automatic transmission. Scott tells us more,

(1 photo of a 1968 Sunlit Gold Mustang Hardtop) Check out this Sunlit Gold 1968 Mustang hardtop. It's owned by David McDowall from Seattle, Washington. It has it's original 289ci V8 engine and an automatic transmission. David purchased it in Woodinville, Washington. He is the 3rd owner. He's wondering if its could possibly be an Oregon/Washington "Golden Nugget Northwest" dealer special. It doesn't have the DSO of 1111 which is on the other Golden Nugget cars. It does have the same paint and trim codes as the Golden Nugget Special but it was built one month before the earliest batch we have found. It may have been the inspiration for the special?

(1 photo of a 1968 Sunlit Gold Mustang Golden Nugget Special Hardtop Advertisement) I had to include this advertisement from the January 31st, 1968 edition of the Lynnwood Enterprise since the microfilm scan was so clear. This Golden Nugget Special was featured at Harris Ford of Lynnwood, Washington just a few miles from my home. Its still there, but I bet all 525 cars have been sold by now...
(4 photos of a 1968 Sunlit Gold Mustang Golden Nugget Special Hardtop) I photographed this Sunlit Gold 1968 Golden Nugget Special at the 2011 Mustang Round-up car show in Bellevue, Washington. It was actually one of two Golden Nugget Specials at the show. 525 of these were built for a special promotion in the Seattle area. Included in the package was a golden plaque for the dash panel bearing the customer's name, Sunlit Gold paint, black vinyl top, black hood panels, black stripe, whitewalls, and sport wheel covers. Checkout the
Seattle Times advertisement I found on this special promotion.
(2 photos of a 1968 Sunlit Gold Mustang Golden Nugget Special Hardtop) This is an authentic 1968 Limited Edition 'Gold Nugget Special'
promotional car for the Pacific Northwest dealerships. One of only 481
actually produced of the scheduled 525 to be offered through the
promotion. The Golden Nugget Mustang has a DSO# 741111 on the door
data plate, with the 1111 indicating the Special Order Unit as such.
It was a promotion that was offered at no additional charge, however
it could not be ordered. According to the promotion details and first
hand information from an original owner, each Ford Dealership in the
Pacific Northwest was to receive one Gold Nugget Special and the first
person who came in wanting to by it was the lucky person. It was sold
with a custom commemorative dash plaque with the original purchaser's
name and a simulated gold nugget affixed. All of the Gold Nugget
Mustangs were only available in the Coupe model, with Sunlit Gold
exterior paint, hood blackout stripes, and a black vinyl top with
either black or nugget gold interior. They were produced with varying
combinations of engines, transmissions and other available options.
This particular Gold Nugget Mustang has the original 200ci inline 6cyl
engine and 3spd manual transmission. It runs and drives excellent and
was driven on a 1200 mile road trip earlier this year with no issues.
It is currently driven several times a month and never has any issues
starting right up. It is virtually a rust free car and besides needing
paint it needs little else to be a great driver/show car. The interior
is in nearly perfect condition. Here is your chance to get a truely
limited production Mustang. There is a Gold Nugget Registry that has
been formed and to date less than two dozen have been confirmed to
still be in existence with less than a dozen actually registered. The
well known California Special had a production run of more than 4100
being built. The Gold Nugget Special was equal to approximately 10% of
that total making it a more unique and rare Mustang than the
California Special. I am asking 6250.00 and I may consider partial
trades. If you're looking for something different and special, this is
the Mustang for you. Feel free to email or call any time. Thanks, Jeff
