In 1986, the Mustang SVO was discontinued due to government regulations. The last year of production saw the removal of two gray and two blue colors, and the addition of a third brake light. The number of engine options was reduced to four: the 4-cylinder with and without turbo, a V6, and a redesigned high-output V8. The redesigned V8 featured a multi-port fuel injection system. 1986 was the Mustang's largest production year since 1979, with 224,410 cars built, a record that has yet to be surpassed.

Mustang GT
The 1986 Mustang GT have carry-overs from 1985 such as a hood stripe with GT lettering, GT embossed in the bodyside molding, rear spoiler, 10 spoke alloy wheels. The GT hood lettering and rear spoiler could be deleted. New to 1986 was a more fuel efficient 5.0L V8 high output V8 engine which put out 200hp, true dual exhaust with dual mufflers and catalytic converters, 8.8 inch Traction-Lok rear axle.

Mustang Turbo SVO
The 1986 Mustang SVO came with the later 1985 model year 2.3L turbo 4-cylinder engine rated at 200hp. The exterior style remained the same with the offset hood scoop, hood design that extended into the grille area, 10 slot wheel covers, color-keyed bodyside molding with charcoal front and rear bumper molding, and double rear spoiler. 1986 was the last year for the SVO Turbo Mustang.

Saleen Mustang
The 1986 Saleen Mustang received a few new items: 16-inch wheels, newly styled front air dam and decklid spoiler, Hurst shifter, new three spoke steering wheel, GT bucket seats, Koni adjustable rear shocks, Kenwood stereo, and a left foot dead pedal. Mostly Mustang LX hatchbacks were converted, but eleven LX convertibles also received the Saleen conversion. See our 1986 Saleen Data Explorer for more information.

Predator
1986 was the last year for the Predator modified by Solomon America and sold at several Ford dealers. They featured a Cobra air cleaner, Monte Carlo bar, roll cage, wood shifter knob, 4 spoke Enki wheels, SVO suspension, fiberglass hood, hood scoop, hood pins, side stripes, and G.T.302 graphics.
