Coupe

Convertible

In 1996, the Mustang was available in two body styles: a coupe or a convertible. It also had three engine options: a basic V6, a GT V8, or a high performance SVT Cobra V8. The SVT Cobra had a new modular engine with a larger hood cowl and distinctive vertical bars on the tail lights. The GT also used the new 4.6L V8 modular engine. The SVT Cobra also introduced a new color called Mystic, which changed from purple to green to gold depending on the light.

Mustang GT
The 1996 Mustang GT was available as a 2-door coupe or convertible. The 1996 Mustang GT received a single wing spoiler, fog lamps in the lower front valance and the new 215hp, 4.6L, single-overhead cam, V8 engine.

SVT Cobra
The 1996 SVT Cobra came with an all new engine. The hand built 4.6L 32-valve double overhead cam V8. A new, Cobra exclusive, color called Mystic was offered which color shifted from blue to purple to green and black. It was an $815 option. Other exterior colors continued to be limited to red, black, and white. See our 1996 SVT Cobra Data Explorer for more information.

Saleen Mustang
The 1996 Saleen Mustang came in four flavors. The S-281 SOHC built from the 4.6L Mustang GT provided most of the conversions. A higher output S-281 DOHC built from the 5.8L Mustang Cobra was available. An S-351 version with a large 5.8L V8. And finally a couple of 500hp supercharged 5.8L Saleen SR models were built for racing. See our 1996 Saleen Data Explorer for more information.

Roush Mustang
The 1996 Roush Mustang came in three levels: the appearance modified Stage 1, the handling improved Stage 2, and the engine upgraded Stage 3. The 1996 Roush Mustang parts came from Roush Performance but installed by qualified dealers and third parties. There was also an optional Ford GT40 header upgrade available for the Stage 3.

Boss Shinoda
The 1996 Boss Shinoda was built by Shinoda Performance Vehicles (SPV). They were placed on the GT and Cobras and came in two levels. Level 1 (Gen I) was a graphics package, Budnick wheels, and a body package (front spoiler, wheel flares and rear "super" spoiler.) The Level 2 (Gen II) added some performance upgrades such as the Shinoda wheels and suspension modifications. As with other companies making modifications to cars right from the Ford factory, all the SPV items could be ordered and placed on any Mustang. SPV Factory modifications included a dash plaque and Shinoda serial number. These were generally built 1994-98, but I have seen SPV dash plaques on later cars as well.
