In 1996, Saleen offered four different versions of its modified Mustang. The most common one was the S-281 SOHC, which used the 4.6L engine from the Mustang GT. A more powerful S-281 DOHC, based on the Mustang Cobra, was also an option. For those who wanted a bigger engine, there was the S-351 with a 5.8L V8. And for the ultimate performance, Saleen built a few 500hp supercharged 5.8L Saleen SR models for racing purposes. Some of the optional features for 1996 were 18-inch magnesium wheels, Recaro racing seats, carbon fiber hood, 3.55 axle, and the Speedster package for the convertible, which added a hard tonneau cover for the backseat and a two-point roll bar.
