The Mustang first debuted April 17, 1964 at the World's Fair held in New York. Ford sold 22,000 units the first day! It was advertised as having the "styling and features of expensive European road cars combined with an American mass-production price." The Mustang was a intermediate sized car offered in two body styles. The hardtop cost a mere $2,320, while the convertible could be purchased for $2,557. The Mustang came standard with a 101hp 170ci six cylinder. Three V8 engines were optional - the 164hp 260ci, 210hp 289ci, and a higher performance 271hp 289ci engine. Other standard equipment included bucket seats, floor shifted transmissions (automatic or manual), and a padded instrument panel. After the Mustang was used as the 1964 Indianapolis 500 Pace Car on May 30th, 190 special hardtop Indy Pace Car replicas (and 3 convertibles) were built. They were special order white with a light blue triple top stripe and had no door mirrors.
This site will call the first model the 1964 Mustang, some (including Ford) call them 1964 1/2 Mustangs, and still others contend that they are early 1965 Mustangs. Which is correct? They all are. These Mustangs are marked with a "5" in the VIN for 1965 but were all assembled before the early August 1964 plant shutdown for 1965 model year retooling. The retooling for the Mustang line included changes in engines, alternator, and trim as well as the introduction of the fastback body style.

Indianapolis 500 Pace Car
|
A quantity of 185 Mustang Indianapolis Pace Car hardtop replicas were sold in 1964 to the public. Not just any dealer could sell them though. They had to compete for them! The competition, called "Checkered Flag" and "Green Flag" contests, were based on the dealer's sales performance prior to the introduction of the Mustang in April of 1964. The top five dealerships in each district received a Pace Car replica. This car was won by Bennett Ford in Salt Lake City, Utah. The pace cars are all sequentially numbered (VIN) between 111500-126000. They have the same dataplate codes; 65A=hardtop, C=Pace Car White paint, 42=white & blue interior. Many were sold to customers with the stripes and lettering removed. Another thirty-seven Wimbledon White 1964 Mustang Pace Car convertibles were created for the actual Indianapolis 500 race. Three of them were modified to be actual pace cars (4-speed transmission, tuned 289ci engines, lowered suspension, and speed rated tires). Another thirty-five convertibles with red, white, or blue interiors were used as Dignitary Cars. They were auctioned to dealerships and sold to the public after the race event.

With the introduction of the Mustang at the 1964 Worlds Fair in New York, Walt Disney created a unique Magic Skyway ride at the Ford Motor Wonder Rotunda. They used real Mustang convertible on the ride! There were twelve 1964 Mustang convertible converted to run on the Magic Skyway track. Their VIN range was 5F08F100003 through 100014. The breakdown were: three Wimbledon White Mustangs (5F08F100006, 5F08F100007, and 5F08F100008); three Raven Black Mustangs (5F08F100003, 5F08F100004, 5F08F100005); three Guardsman Blue Mustangs (5F08F100009, 5F08F100010, 5F08F100011), and three Rangoon Red Mustangs (5F08F100012, 5F08F100013, 5F08F100014). These cars were later replaced with 1965 Mustangs and converted for resale to the public.
