Suburban Ford in Auburn, California sold 1968 Rainbow Of Colors Mustang hardtops. This ad is from the February 7, 1968 edition of the Sacramento Bee newspaper. The ad talks about 10 specially new, turned-on colors. It almost looks like you order one - based on you choosing the custom equipment and color. The Mustang Rainbow Price is pretty low at $2359.

Ever hear about the Mississippi, Louisiana 1968 Dixie Special limited edition Mustang? Neither did we until we discovered this series of newspaper advertisements from several Mississippi and Louisiana dealerships between February 27th and March 29th of 1968. This ad was placed by Swartzfager Ford in the March 15th, 1968 edition of the Laurel Leader-Call in Laurel Mississippi. From this ad we see that the Dixie Special was a limited number of specially built Mustang, Fairlane hardtop, and Ford XL fastbacks for the Dixie area. From the other advertisements in this set we see that the Dixie Special included a special paint job, a Dixie Special license plate, and an emblem on every unit. It doesn't appear that just one color was used since this advertisement says Special Colors
. From the last ad we know that at least one was a light yellow and most of the ads state a Mustang hardtop. We also think the Dixie Special emblem is the 11 star badge with the Dixie Special lettering shown at the bottom of each ad. Probably 11 stars for each of the states in the original Confederate Union. Now the hunt is on to find one of these Mustangs! Could this be one of them?
The DSO, date, and special color matches. This ad shows some new 68 Ford cars on a car carrier. The two Mustangs on top look like GTs. They have the fog lights in the grille and C-stripes on their sides. It is interesting that they have the economy dog-dish style hub caps. Many of the 60s cars were ordered this way.
This ad for the Dixie Special Mustang was placed by Swartzfager Ford in the March 29th, 1968 edition of the Laurel Leader-Call in Laurel Mississippi. This is the only advertisement we found for the Dixie Special Mustang which specifies a Dixie Special license plate. The full version of this ad is on the next page.
Here is the full ad for the Dixie Special Mustang was placed by Swartzfager Ford in the March 29th, 1968 edition of the Laurel Leader-Call in Laurel Mississippi. It doesn't show the Mustang, but it does in the text.
The is one of the earlier advertisement we've found for the Dixie Special Mustang which was placed by Swartzfager Ford in the February 29th, 1968 edition of the Laurel Leader-Call in Laurel Mississippi. We think this is a Ford designed ad for the Dixie Special since we also found the exact ad used by several dealers in the area including Reliable Ford of Ruston, Louisiana. This ad mentions the Dixie Special emblem and the special paint.
We've found several 1968 Dixie Special Mustang advertisements from Bubba Oustalet Ford of Jennings, Louisiana which is still there at the same location. This Dixie Special Mustang is a hardtop with vinyl roof, bucket seats, magic-air heater & defroster, seat belts, shoulder harness belts, back-up lights, nylon carpets, Dixie Special Emblem, windshield washers, and all vinyl upholstery for $2,320. This ad was in the February 27th edition of the Jennings Daily News of Jennings, Louisiana.
Here are parts from two newspaper ads placed by Bubba Oustalet Ford of Jennings, Louisiana for the 1968 Dixie Special Mustang. What's interesting here is that one of the colors is specified as a light yellow special paint. We think there were several special colors used on the Dixie Mustang but we think all had the Dixie Special emblem. The first ad was placed on March 12th while the second on March 4th. The rest of the advertisement says nothing about the Dixie Special Mustang. The stock number in both of these ads may be wrong because a 1968 Torino in the full ad states the same Stock Number as this car.
Here is a close-up of what we believe is the Dixie Special emblem placed on each special model. We are unsure where they were placed but possibly on the dash or fender or rear roof column.
This is a Sunlit Gold 1968 Mustang Golden Nugget Special coupe. The Golden Nugget Mustangs came with the blackened hood louvers, black side C-stripes, and black interiors. They also came with a plaque on the dash with the owner's name. This one does not have the plaque.

Sunlit Gold was a standard color offering for the 1968 Mustang. The right side of this Gold Nugget Mustang looks as good as the left.
The interior is black.
This 1968 Mustang hardtop is painted Pebble Beige. It has disc brakes, power steering, air conditioning, the exterior decor option and the 289ci 2v engine with automatic transmission.
A very original looking Wimbledon White 1968 Mustang Shelby GT-350. Its a little beat up, missing its Lemans over-the-top stripes, front grille, and a backseat but otherwise its in amazing condition. I photographed this Shelby GT-350 at the 2011 Mustang Roundup car show held in Bellevue, Washington.
