In the autumn of 1969, Shelby made the decision to discontinue production of Shelby GTs. The remaining stock of approximately 789 cars was sold as the 1970 Shelby, which was equipped with 1970 VIN numbers, a front chin spoiler, and black stripes on their hoods. Additionally, these cars were fitted with emissions control systems that were mandatory for the 1970 model year. This marked the end of the Shelby until its reappearance in the 2006 model year.

The Shelby VIN number is found on the top upper flange of the right and left front fender apron visible with the hood up, on a plated riveted to the top of the dashboard on the passenger's side, and on the warranty plate on the driver's door.
