1976


Hatchback

New to 1976 was the Cobra II Mustang upgrade package, which could be added to any of the hatchback body styles, including the Mach 1. The Cobra II package included front and rear spoilers, a simulated hood scoop, quarter window louvers, and snake emblems on a white with blue stripes or black with gold stripes paint scheme. The Cobra graphics were designed by Jim Wangers, who is credited with fathering the Pontiac GTO, and the entire $325 option package was okayed by Carroll Shelby.

1977

Hatchback
The 1977 Cobra II Mustang, just as the previous first year, came in white with blue stripes, blue with white stripes, or black with gold stripes. New in 1977 the Cobra could come with white with red stripes and white with green stripes. Early 1977 Cobras had the body side lettering low on the door, later in the year they were higher up. The $535 Cobra II options package required $58 power breaks. 21% of all Mustang hatchbacks sold in 1977 were ordered with the Cobra II package. The Cobra package came with rack and pinion steering, front disc breaks, the 2.3 liter 4 cylinder engine, racing stripes, blacked out grille, black racing mirrors, rear window louvers, rear quarter window louvers, front air dam, a non-functional rear opening hood scoop, rear wing, aluminum instrument and door panels, Cobra emblems, and styled steel wheels.

1978


King Cobra Hatchback

Cobra Hatchback

In 1978, Ford introduced the King Cobra option for the Mustang II at a price of $1277. This version was considered the "Boss of the Mustang stable" and featured a giant snake decal on the hood, pinstriping around the windows, decklid, wheel lips, rocker panels, belt, and over-the-roof area. It also had a large front and rear spoiler, rear quarter flares, spoke wheels, and the 5.0L V8 engine.

The standard 1978 Mustang Cobra II received a new stripe tape treatment mid-year with tri-color tape stripes, large "Cobra" block letters midlevel on the side and decklid spoiler, a Cobra decal on the back spoiler, and a Cobra II snake emblem on a black grille.

1979


Hatchback

The 1979 Cobra Mustang options package originally cost $1,179 and included the 2.3-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine; hood scoop; forged metric aluminum wheels with three main wide slotted spokes (replaced with 1993+ wheels on this car); blacked-out window trim, body side and bumper trim, and lower body; sport mirrors; color-keyed rear quarter window louver panels; tachometer and instrument cluster panel; and sport-tuned exhaust with bright tailpipe tips. The hood graphics were an additional $78.

1980

Hatchback
The 1980 Mustang Cobra package included an aerodynamic front and rear end. This package option was so significant that its cost was $1482, with the Cobra hood graphics costing an additional $88. The Cobra package was patterned off the 1979 pace car model and came with dual sport mirrors, sport tuned exhaust with bright tailpipe extensions, forged metric aluminum wheels, special instrument cluster, 8000 rpm tachometer, and a turbocharged 255ci, 4.2 liter, V8 engine. This car has optional rear quarter window louvers which cover the lower window "Cobra" lettered decal.

1981


Hatchback

1981 was the last year for the Cobra option package. It was priced at $1,588 and came with 190/65R-390 TRX tires, forged metric aluminum wheels, an 8,000 RPM tachometer, two-tone paint, Cobra tape treatment, a hood scoop, sport exhaust, dual black sport mirrors, black bumper guards, dual accent stripe body side moldings, and black moldings around the windows. A Cobra package taping delete option existed to save $65, but the special large Cobra hood decal was an additional $95 option.

1993


Hatchback

The Mustang Cobra, a hatchback with modified body panels, better handling, and 235 horsepower, was introduced in 1993 by Ford's Special Vehicle team (SVT). The front grille had a horse emblem on the top and no side scoops on the lower. The rear had a one piece design with exhaust cutouts and a special trunk lid spoiler. A special Cobra R model was built for racing that year.

1994

Convertible

The 1994 SVT Cobra came in two versions: the coupe and the convertible. This Mustang had a new look with fog lamps in the front, Cobra snake logos, and a special rear spoiler with LED brake lights. It also had better performance, with a V8 engine that boosted the horsepower by 25. All the 1994 Cobra convertibles were replicas of the Rio Red Indianapolis Pace Car.

1995

Convertible

The 1995 Cobra came in both a 2-door coupe and convertible body style. The standard Cobra Mustang of 1995 was similar to the 1994 model, except for a new SVT badge on the trunk. A special Cobra R coupe was also made, which had a Crystal White color and a powerful 5.4L V8 engine that produced 300hp. It also had improved handling features.

1996

An all new engine powered the 1996 SVT Cobra. It was a handbuilt 4.6L V8 with 32 valves and double overhead cams. The Cobra also had a unique color option called Mystic, which changed from blue to purple to green and black depending on the angle and light level. This color shift cost an extra $815. The other exterior colors were red, black, and white, as usual.

1997

Convertible

The 1997 SVT Cobra had only a few changes from the 1996 model. It had a larger grille opening and a new color option, Pacific Green. The only optional equipment was the Preferred Equipment Package, which included a Mach 460 sound system and leather seats, and the rear decklid spoiler.

1998


Coupe

Convertible

The 1998 SVT Cobra saw a few changes from 1997: yellow paint was available, a new 5-spoke wheel design was used, the under-hood tower brace was redesigned, and there were some interior changes. Standard equipment included ABS, sport seats, the premium sound system, power equipment, rear window defroster, AC, cruise control, floor mats, lighted visor mirrors, and key-less entry. Optional equipment was limited to extra interior leather trim and a rear spoiler.

1999


Coupe

The 1999 SVT Cobra saw the redesigned features of the Mustang platform. The 4.6L engine, was altered to 320 horsepower. The 1999 Cobra received a new independent rear suspension. Another new 5-spoke 17-inch wheel was introduced. Yellow and blue paint were out, but green paint was in.

2000


Coupe

Only 300 SVT Cobra R Mustangs were built in 2000, and all of them came in Performance Red. No standard SVT Cobras were built in 2000. The Cobra R has a huge 5.4L V8 engine that puts out 395 horsepower, a Canton 8-quart oil pan, a McCleod aluminum flywheel, a Tremec T-56 6-speed transmission, a 4-inch aluminum drive shaft, an 8.8-inch short shaft 31-spline fully independent rear suspension, Brembo 4-piston calipers with 13-inch rotors, Eibach 800lb/750lb springs, Bistien shock absorbers, Borla mufflers with side exit exhaust, and Recaro seats.

2001

The 2001 SVT Cobra Mustang had a special Cobra 320hp (at 6000rpm), 281 cubic inch, 4.6 liter, electronic fuel injected, double overhead cam, V8 engine. It came in eight of the standard 2001 Mustang colors (excluding the green), sport seats, power equipment group, rear spoiler, polished wheels, and Cobra letters embossed into the rear bumper. It had basically no changes from the 1999 model.

2002

Convertible

Limited to 100 units and shipped exclusively to Australia, the 2002 SVT Cobra Mustang featured a special Cobra 320hp (at 6000rpm), 281 cubic inch, 4.6 liter, electronic fuel injected, double overhead cam, V8 engine. Just as in 2001, the 2002 Cobra was available in eight of the standard 2001 Mustang colors (excluding the greens), sport seats, power equipment group, rear spoiler, polished wheels, and Cobra letters embossed on the rear bumper. Conversions for Australia included fender reflectors (behind the front wheels), extra driving lights in the front bumper, and right-hand-drive (of course).

2003

The 2003 SVT Cobra was offered in both the convertible and coupe body styles. Besides a host of trim modifications, the engine consisted of a hand-built 4.6L DOHC Supercharged V8. This engine was a monster with 390 horsepower and 390 foot-pounds of torque. The 2003 Cobra was code-named the "Terminator" by the SVT group. It is said that this model terminated any competition between the Cobra and the General Motors' Trans Am and Camaro models. 2003 was the 10th year the SVT Cobra was offered. This event was commemorated with the release of the Limited Edition 2003 10th Anniversary SVT Cobra. The limited edition modifications over the normal Cobra included: carbon fiber patterned leather on the top of the steering wheel, carbon fiber leather on the shifter and hand brake, red window switch bezels, red seat inserts, red painted brake calipers all the way around, and big 17x9 inch 10th Anniversary wheels. Offered in both coupes (1003 built) and convertibles (1000 built), the exterior colors were limited to Torch Red, Silver, and Black.

2004

Convertible

The 2004 SVT Cobra came in both coupe and convertible body styles. It featured a powerful 390-horsepower 4.6L DOHC supercharged V8 engine, inverted dual hood scoops, a unique front bumper, a lowered spoiler, a 6-speed manual transmission (only), and unique 17-inch chrome aluminum wheels. The Mystichrome paint was also exclusive to the 2004 Cobra model.
