(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) This ad from Canoga Park Ford, in the The Valley News and Green Sheet, of Van Nuys, California, on 6-9-1968, shows a Rainbow of Colors promotional sale and its details of the car. See the next picture for an enlargement.

(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) Here is a close-up of the Larson Ford, Rainbow of Colors promotion, newspaper advertisement from June 9th, 1968. It says that the car comes with air conditioning, 289ci V8 engine, automatic transmission, power steering, radio, heater, tinted glass, wheel covers, white side wall tires, and a color of the "Nationally Advertised Rainbow colors not ordinarily available". We've found advertisements from the San Jose, LA, Salt Lake City, Idaho, and Montana areas for this promotion.

(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) We think this is a Rainbow of Colors promotional advertisement from Givan Ford of Provo, Utah just south of Salt Lake City we found in Provo the Daily Herald of June 27th, 1968. The first photo from this set is an earlier advertisement from Givan. This ad is interesting because it shows the Rainbow of Colors being applied to a Sprint 200 hardtop which is more common to the cars we have found for this promotion.

(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) Here is another dealer in Utah with a Mustang Rainbow Sale. Its E&M Ford of Layton, Utah. We found this ad in the Ogden Standard-Examiner, March 27, 1968, of Ogden, Utah.

(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) Gremlin Green, Flower Orchid, Stone Yellow, Beatnik Blue, Poppy Pink, Turned-on Orange are the special order colors listed in this 1968 "Mustang Rainbow Roundup" sale in Pocatello, Idaho. The Rainbow of Colors promotion offered Mustangs with special order paints in the California and Idaho areas. We found this ad in the May 2nd, 1968 edition of the Idaho State Journal, Pocatello, Idaho.

(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) Mustang Rainbow Sale 10 special colors, limited edition Mustangs says this ad from Grisworld & Wight from the February 16th, 1968, edition of The Modesto Bee and News Herald, in Modesto, California. Later this dealership sold only the Eastertime Coral color as a Color of the Month, see Orville and Ann's Mustang and this car in need of restoration.

(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) The Feburary 27, 1968 edition of the Eureka Time Standard from Eureka, California had this Harper Ford ad for the 1968 Rainbow Sale promotion Mustangs. This ad is a little different as they describe six Mustangs they have in stock. Three are stock colors; a Sunlit Gold hardtop and two Wimbledon White hardtops. Three are special order colors; a Meadowlark Yellow hardtop, a Brittney Blue hardtop, and a Diamond Blue hardtop. Each has the 302ci V8 and an automatic transmission. The Diamond Blue paint was a stock Mustang color in 1967.

(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) Frank Cate Ford of Elk Grove, California also sold Rainbow of Colors Mustangs in 1968. This ad is from the February 22, 1968 edition of the Sacramento Bee from Sacramento, California. They advertise it as the "Rainbow Sale" and have a bunch of 1968 Mustang hardtops in all new rainbow colors. They cost $3420.

(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) Drew Ford from La Mesa, California also sold 1968 Rainbow of Colors Mustangs. This ad was found in the Saturday, February 17, 1968 edition of the San Diego Union newspaper. Drew advertises the 1968 Rainbow of Colors hardtops as having 695x14 whitewall tires, tinted glass, push-button radio, heater, defroster, deluxe seat belts, deep-file nylon carpeting, and available in standard colors or the all-new "Mod" Rainbow Colors of Pink, Coral, Orange, Cream, Yellow, Gold, Green, and Blue. Not a bad price either - at $2525. Drew Ford closed it doors in at the end of 2014.

(from page 66 of the 1968 Collection) Suburban Ford in Auburn, California sold 1968 Rainbow Of Colors Mustang hardtops. This ad is from the February 7, 1968 edition of the Sacramento Bee newspaper. The ad talks about 10 specially new, turned-on colors. It almost looks like you order one - based on you choosing the custom equipment and color. The Mustang Rainbow Price is pretty low at $2359.

(from page 66 of the 1968 Collection) Ever hear about the Mississippi, Louisiana 1968 Dixie Special limited edition Mustang? Neither did we until we discovered this series of newspaper advertisements from several Mississippi and Louisiana dealerships between February 27th and March 29th of 1968. This ad was placed by Swartzfager Ford in the March 15th, 1968 edition of the Laurel Leader-Call in Laurel Mississippi. From this ad we see that the Dixie Special was a limited number of specially built Mustang, Fairlane hardtop, and Ford XL fastbacks for the Dixie area. From the other advertisements in this set we see that the Dixie Special included a special paint job, a Dixie Special license plate, and an emblem on every unit. It doesn't appear that just one color was used since this advertisement says Special Colors. From the last ad we know that at least one was a light yellow and most of the ads state a Mustang hardtop. We also think the Dixie Special emblem is the 11 star badge with the Dixie Special lettering shown at the bottom of each ad. Probably 11 stars for each of the states in the original Confederate Union. Now the hunt is on to find one of these Mustangs! Could this be one of them? The DSO, date, and special color matches. This ad shows some new 68 Ford cars on a car carrier. The two Mustangs on top look like GTs. They have the fog lights in the grille and C-stripes on their sides. It is interesting that they have the economy dog-dish style hub caps. Many of the 60s cars were ordered this way.

(from page 66 of the 1968 Collection) This ad for the Dixie Special Mustang was placed by Swartzfager Ford in the March 29th, 1968 edition of the Laurel Leader-Call in Laurel Mississippi. This is the only advertisement we found for the Dixie Special Mustang which specifies a Dixie Special license plate. The full version of this ad is on the next page.

(from page 66 of the 1968 Collection) Here is the full ad for the Dixie Special Mustang was placed by Swartzfager Ford in the March 29th, 1968 edition of the Laurel Leader-Call in Laurel Mississippi. It doesn't show the Mustang, but it does in the text.

(from page 66 of the 1968 Collection) The is one of the earlier advertisement we've found for the Dixie Special Mustang which was placed by Swartzfager Ford in the February 29th, 1968 edition of the Laurel Leader-Call in Laurel Mississippi. We think this is a Ford designed ad for the Dixie Special since we also found the exact ad used by several dealers in the area including Reliable Ford of Ruston, Louisiana. This ad mentions the Dixie Special emblem and the special paint.

(from page 66 of the 1968 Collection) We've found several 1968 Dixie Special Mustang advertisements from Bubba Oustalet Ford of Jennings, Louisiana which is still there at the same location. This Dixie Special Mustang is a hardtop with vinyl roof, bucket seats, magic-air heater & defroster, seat belts, shoulder harness belts, back-up lights, nylon carpets, Dixie Special Emblem, windshield washers, and all vinyl upholstery for $2,320. This ad was in the February 27th edition of the Jennings Daily News of Jennings, Louisiana.

(from page 66 of the 1968 Collection) Here are parts from two newspaper ads placed by Bubba Oustalet Ford of Jennings, Louisiana for the 1968 Dixie Special Mustang. What's interesting here is that one of the colors is specified as a light yellow special paint. We think there were several special colors used on the Dixie Mustang but we think all had the Dixie Special emblem. The first ad was placed on March 12th while the second on March 4th. The rest of the advertisement says nothing about the Dixie Special Mustang. The stock number in both of these ads may be wrong because a 1968 Torino in the full ad states the same Stock Number as this car.

(from page 66 of the 1968 Collection) Here is a close-up of what we believe is the Dixie Special emblem placed on each special model. We are unsure where they were placed but possibly on the dash or fender or rear roof column.

(from page 68 of the 1968 Collection) This is a copy of a Ford press release for the 1968 California Special hardtop. The text reads, Ionia, Michigan - Fiber glass components for Ford's recently announced California Special version of the popular Mustang -- designated the Mustang GT/CS -- are being produced by A.O. Smith Corporation's plant here at a rapid pace to keep up with West Coast demand for the sporty model. A fiberglass deck lid with integral racing spoiler lower back panel and body side scoops are among the new Mustang's design features that reflect the definite influence of Ford's 1968 Shelby GT models, built at Ionia by A.O. Smith.

(from page 68 of the 1968 Collection) This is the official results of the 1968 Mobil Economy Run held from April 2nd through April 4th from LA to Indianapolis. The race was to end in New York but was cancelled on April 5th due to civil unrest across the country because of the death of Martin Luther King Jr. on Thursday April 4th. The Mustang came in 5th place in the Class "A" compact six class. This ad was placed in the April 9th edition of the Bakersfield Californian. This race inspired the 1969 Mustang E special edition. In December of 1968, it was announced by Richard F Tucker, vice president of marketing for Mobil in North America, the event will be cancelled in the United States citing "changing advertising patterns and changing emphasis in automotive performance as major factors influencing the decision."

(from page 68 of the 1968 Collection) These are the official results of the 1967 Mobile Economy Run. The Mustang came in 4th place of the Class "A" compact six and 5th place of the Class B compact eight. The race was held from April 4-10 and raced from LA to Detroit. This ad was placed in the April 11th edition of the Bakersfield Californian.
