1969 Winter Blue Mach 1 with Super Jet Cobra Engine Winter Blue 1969 Mustang Mach 1 with 360hp (at 5400rpm), 428 cubic inch, Super Cobra Jet V8 engine with Ram Air induction, a hardened steel cast crankshaft, special "LeMans" connection rods, and special balancing for drag racing. Hot Rod magazine called the Cobra Jet "the fastest running pure stock in the history of man." Only one engine was more powerful in 1969 and that was the 375hp (at 5200rpm), 429 cubic inch V8 engine for the Boss option. 1969 was the first and only early year the Mustang came with four headlights.

interior view Separate driver and passenger side dash cowls gave the 1969 Mustang interior an aircraft cockpit-look with clock centered in the passenger side dash. 1969 introduced the Rim Blow steering wheel option for $36 which allowed the horn to be activated by squeezing hard anywhere along the outer edge of the wheel. A soft rubber insert around the perimeter of the steering wheel had two strips of copper inside the rubber, held apart by two lips and connected to a switch. When squeezed the copper would touch and the switch would activate the horn. Ford soon discovered that many drivers squeezed the steering wheel harder while turning causing the dreaded accidental honking in turns. The rimblow steering wheel is definitely not a steering wheel to wrap in leather.

Poppy Green 1969 Russ Davis Special Mach 1 Fastback Peter Manson's restored Poppy Green, 1969, Russ Davis Special / Rainbow of Colors, Super Cobra Jet, Mach 1 fastback was our Attitude of the Week for March 8th, 2008. This amazing Mach 1 was one of 10 ordered by Russ Davis Ford of Covina California to promote his dealership and most likely his racing cars. We actually have its sister on our site. Peter has done extensive research as well as restoration on his car. The Rainbow of Colors was a west coast primarily 1968 sales promotion which offered new Mustang owners many sporty upgrades as well as one of 13 or 14 special order bright colors. Many of these cars were base models. New information on Russ Davis shows that this special order may have been for a racing promotion since the several race car drivers were salesmen including Gas Ronda with his famous brightly colored Cobra Jet racer.
Poppy Green 1969 Russ Davis Special Mach 1 Fastback Here is a close-up of the correct wheels for this car. This view also shows off the functional Cobra Jet shaker style hood scoop, hood pins, and grille mounted fog lamps. Peter is probably the second owner of this car, since he found it only a few miles away from the original dealer in California. Peter has also done extensive research on his Poppy Green color WT7034 and the other colors offered in the Rainbow of Colors west coast promotion.
