Black 1978 Mustang II King Cobra hatchback as seen at the 29th Annual Central Illinois Ford Day Show at Dennision Ford in Bloomington, Illinois. This one has the 302ci V8 engine, 4-speed manual transmission, power steering, power brakes, T-tops, luxury interior, and tinted glass.
Black 1978 Mustang II King Cobra hatchback, left front view. It has custom graphics painted on the hood. We have a close-up in another photo.
Black 1978 Mustang II King Cobra hatchback, left rear view.
Here is a close-up of the custom Cobra snake painted on the hood.
It has a brownish-orange interior with cloth plaid seats covers.
Is this a Mad Max Interceptor Mustang? No, It's a 1978 Monroe Handler Mustang. It was a body kit featured in a June 1977 Hot Rod Magazine custom build to promote Monroe's Handler line of shock absorbers. For a mere $1250 you could get your own fiberglass body kit. This version wears a set of custom 18-inch KMC dime wheels with Nitti 555 R 275-40/18 tires.
The Monroe Handler body kit had a huge bumper with lots of vent holes and driving lights way at the bottom near the road.
The rear body panels are interesting. The rear spoiler wraps around to the rear of the door openings. The indented side on the doors is extended deep into the rear fender kits.
Check out this rear end view. This is quite different from the
stock 1978 Mustang.
The inside of this car has lots of custom touches. I like the polished metal dash insert around the instruments.
This is a magazine ad promoting Monroe's Handler series street performance shock. It was displayed on a custom bodied 1978 Mustang II. The ad talks about the 1/24th scale Monroe Handler Mustang Revell plastic model you could purchase.
This is the Monroe Handler Mustang Revell plastic model kit. Check out the text on the lower right corner of the box - "Photo of Actual Model". Yeah right! It's a "Cobra Street Racer".
Check out this yellow 1978 Monroe Handler Mustang II hatchback. It has a custom hood, interior, and Lambo doors! This car has since been restored back to looking more like the original Monroe Handler.
This one has custom yellow and red seat.
Check out this stock looking 1978 Monroe Handler Mustang! This is an original one built using special body panels (which you could later order yourself) to promote the Monroe's Handler series street performance shock. This is one of the original 6 produced to be given away in contests back in 1978. The car only has 803 miles on the clock! The engine compartment has been modified. I want that storage building it's parked in!
The Monroe Handler Mustang has an 8-piece body kit made from fiberglass. You could purchase the parts from Creative Car Products as the "Handler II" kit.
Compare this Monroe Handler Mustang to the
original Monroe Handler ad. The wheels are the same. The rocker wording is the same. The only thing I see different is this one does not have the rear side quarter window louvers.
That is one huge spoiler! It wraps around to the fenders. Again... Nice storage building! It even has a "Monroe Handler" license plate.
The engine has been modified. I am not sure what it originally looked like. This one is a 5.0L engine.
The interior is black. It has a manual transmission without a center console. There is a 'Monroe Handler' logo plate on the passenger side of the dash. See the next photo for a close-up.
